About this Work

Maki Ishii, 1992 (transl. Kei Ishii)

The title "Ko Kū" means "emptyness, vastness of the heaven". The term roots in buddhist thinking and epitomises the containment of all things in its natural existence without any artificial or alienating influcences.

This composition is dedicated to Toshio Kawauchi, the late leader of the japanese drummers group Kodō, who died on January 1st, 1987.

Premiere: April 1987 at the Berliner Philharmonie hall. Ryūteki: Michiko Akao; Percussion: Berlin Percussion; conductor: the composer.
